GENERAL PURPOSE Develops compensation philosophy and strategy to increase simplicity, efficiency, and transparency in compensation policies and related information; addresses and resolves questions, complaints, and requests for adjustments related to individual compensation matters; oversees, facilitates, and participates in the annual processes for determining individual compensation, including salaries and bonuses; and oversees the production and reporting of aggregate and individual compensation data as well as aggregate and individual hours, revenue, and profitability data. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS These essential functions are primary job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation. Compensation Strategy Develops compensation philosophy and strategy to increase simplicity, efficiency, and transparency in compensation for Associates, Counsel, and non-partnership-track Attorneys and Patent Agents (Attorneys), including salaries, bonuses, and other Attorney-specific benefits (excluding health benefits) to recruit and retain top talent. Collaborates with the Management Committee, the Chief Talent Officer, and the Senior Director of Legal Talent. Monitors and reports on industry developments and trends in Attorney compensation in all relevant markets. Prepares summary reports for the Management Committee, practice group chairs, subgroup leaders, and Office Managing Partners as well the Chief Talent Officer and the Senior Director of Legal Talent (Leaders) on industry developments and trends. Proposes compensation policies to further compensation philosophy and strategy. Oversees and facilitates development, analysis, implementation, and administration of compensation for all Attorneys. Oversees analysis of current and proposed compensation policies and processes, including analysis of the costs for proposed changes. Compensation Communications Communicates information about Attorney compensation policies and related information to Leaders, Attorneys, and Business Professionals as appropriate. Develops communications and messaging about compensation, including policy documents, presentations, announcements, and FAQs. Addresses and resolves questions, complaints, and requests for adjustments related to individual compensation matters from Leaders and Attorneys. Recommends and seeks approval for adjustments from the Management Committee where necessary. Documents reasons for adjustments as necessary. Answers questions from lateral Attorney candidates about compensation and provides orientation to compensation for newly hired Attorneys. Compensation Processes and Outcomes Oversees, facilitates, and participates in the annual processes for determining individual Attorney compensation, including salaries and bonuses. Facilitates the work, decisions, and outcomes of the Attorney compensation committees and oversees the administration of the committee processes. Oversees the implementation of compensation process outcomes with HRIS and payroll. Provides Attorney recruiting with compensation terms for candidates for Attorney positions, when necessary (e.g., where salaries are in ranges). Compensation Analytics Oversees the production and reporting of aggregate and individual Attorney compensation data as well as aggregate and individual Attorney hours, revenue, and profitability data necessary for Attorney evaluation and compensation processes. Oversees production of annualized hours information for all Attorneys on a monthly basis. Coordinates with the Attorney evaluation team to produce and provide hours and other financial metrics for the Attorney evaluation processes. Compensation Surveys Oversees the production, maintenance, and analysis of Attorney compensation data for internal ad hoc requests for such data and external reporting and survey purposes. Staff Supervision Supervises one Attorney Compensation Analyst. SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED Must have exceptional/sophisticated skills in all the following areas: Communicating, both orally and in writing, with sophisticated audiences about complicated and/or sometimes disputed compensation matters. Responding to groups and individuals regarding compensation matters with accuracy, diplomacy, and tact. Understanding and analyzing significant amounts of data and complicated processes and calculations. Managing complicated, multipart processes executed simultaneously. Managing and leading collaboration with peers and teams across multiple departments. Advanced skill set in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word, in addition to HRIS and other databases. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A bachelors degree or equivalent experience is required. Five years of experience in a manager-level role in a professional services organization is required, preferably in a law firm. An MBA or JD is a plus. Colorado compensation range: $97,240 to $150,440 annually New York compensation range: $112,830 to $174,560 annually These ranges are specific to Colorado and New York, depending on qualification and experience. These ranges may not be applicable to other locations. Perkins Coie may provide a discretionary bonus annually and information regarding benefits can be found here.
