The Division of Law (DOL) serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government, with its work taking three forms: providing legal advice to the state’s departments and agencies; defending the state in civil litigation; and bringing civil enforcement actions against individuals, corporations, and other entities that harm New Jersey and its residents.


The Division of Law is looking for employment litigators who are interested in public service and a wide range of clients and matters.

Deputies assigned to the State Police, Employment and Corrections (“SPEC”) section practice in the U.S. District Court, Third Circuit Court of Appeals, N.J. Superior Court, N.J. Appellate Division, OAL, Government Records Council and the EEOC. SPEC provides primary representation to the N.J. State Police, Department of Corrections, Parole Board and the Juvenile Justice Commission. Individual and class action civil rights claims include matters such as excessive force, fatal shootings, wrongful arrest, conditions of confinement, religious, medical and legal access and ADA violations. Deputies works primarily on employment matters, hone their written advocacy skills through a significant appellate practice, with opportunities to argue in the Appellate Division. Trial skills are sharpened in defense of employment claims brought against State agencies, with opportunities to try cases in State and Federal court.

The Assistant Section Chief (ASC) directly supervises Deputy Attorneys General (DAsG) in employment law matters and works closely with the Section Chief and Assistant Attorneys General in the Litigation Practice Group;

The ASC also provides counsel and representation to the Section's clients;

Assists with planning and managing the supervision and operations of the SPEC Section;

Assigns matters and supervise DAsG in the Section;

Litigates and supervises litigation, as needed;

Evaluates the performance of assigned DAsG;

Conducts case file reviews;

And performs other duties as required.


Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor. Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.

Four (4) years of experience as a practicing attorney, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to applicants who possess strong employment litigation experience with demonstrated ability to handle employment litigation cases as trial counsel. Please submit supplement to resume outlining employment litigation experience.
