Miles & Stockbridge is a leading law firm with more than 230 lawyers representing businesses of various sizes, from national and global Fortune 500 companies to local and emerging businesses. Founded in 1932, our firm operates in seven mid-Atlantic offices, located across Maryland and in Washington, D.C. and Tysons Corner, Virginia. Firm Culture With our core values as a foundation, Miles & Stockbridge is carrying out our 2020 Vision and Strategic Plan by building on strengths, achieving operational excellence, and creating a distinctive Client Experience. At the heart of Miles & Stockbridge’s core values is a commitment to a culture that fosters excellence, integrity, respect, compassion, diversity, and teamwork. Miles & Stockbridge has historically enjoyed an outstanding workplace culture. There is very little hierarchical distinction made between our associates and principals on a day-to-day basis. We staff matters leanly and give our younger associates responsibility at an earlier stage in their career than our counterparts. It is noteworthy that more than 20 of our lawyers have returned to Miles & Stockbridge following departures to other firms or businesses. We have a vibrant and dedicated support staff that contributes to our success in some extraordinary ways. Staff members participate on our client teams. In addition, our colleagues have an ardent “internal” service ethic that complements our external client service focus. Colleagues treat other colleagues who ask them for assistance in their area of expertise with the same level of urgency and responsiveness we bring to our “external” clients. Our industry teams, which include lawyers from varied practice groups across all offices, also foster this collaborative, team-minded approach to the practice of law. We intend to create a unique client experience across the entirety of each interaction with our firm's people, services, and settings. In that regard, we hired Ed Bodensiek last year in a new chief client experience officer role to lead this initiative. Our mission and purpose exemplifies our commitment to client service and to our colleagues: our clients and colleagues are the heart of the matter. We solve problems, with passion, because to us it’s personal. We go the extra mile. Diversity & Inclusion Miles & Stockbridge supports diversity and inclusion in a multitude of ways. We intentionally seek to increase the number of lawyers of color, women and LGBT lawyers and foster their professional and leadership development. In addition to our diverse board of directors, many other women and lawyers of color are in leadership positions and are members of our firm’s key internal committees. Our firm supports three active affinity groups—one for women lawyers, one for lawyers of color, and one for our Jewish lawyers and colleagues. We are in the process of forming an affinity group for our LGBT lawyers. Making Miles & Stockbridge more diverse is a key strategic objective. In 2015, our firm implemented a policy requiring that we interview at least one woman, minority or LGBT lawyer for each open position. Since 2015, Miles & Stockbridge has hired a total of 50 lawyers and patent agents, 21 of whom were diverse, and 26 of whom were women. Our lawyers of color comprise 15% of our total lawyers and our women lawyers comprise 35% of our total lawyers, both of which are above the national averages for firms our size. In 2016, Miles & Stockbridge hired our first-ever full-time Director of Diversity & Inclusion, Demetria Johnson, whose role is to work with firm leaders in the hiring, retention, business development efforts and promotion of our diverse lawyers. Among its recognition in the realm of diversity, Miles & Stockbridge has been named the #2 firm nationally in Law360’s “Best Law Firms for Black Attorneys” list. The firm was recognized for its strong representation by black lawyers, including principals. In 2016, the firm was honored as the “Most Inclusive Law Firm for Minority Business” by the Maryland Washington Minority Companies Association and earned the President’s Award for Diversity from the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC). Our firm is governed by a nine-lawyer board of directors led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Frisch. We have intentionally sought to diversify our board, which includes three women and one black principal, Michael A. Brown, a nationally-recognized trial lawyer who also leads our diversity committee. We are internally organized into a dozen practice areas with multiple sub-practices: banking & finance; corporate, securities and tax; creditors’ rights & bankruptcy; environment & energy; family law & private clients, government contracts; health care; intellectual property and technology; labor, employment, benefits & immigration; litigation & dispute resolution; products liability and mass torts; real estate & construction. Marketing & Client Service Miles & Stockbridge has a strategic, business-savvy and highly-effective marketing department, which drives and implements our firm’s marketing and business development strategies and programs in line with our firm’s strategic direction and culture. This includes externally-focused areas of strategic planning, branding, and client satisfaction interviews, along with substantial capabilities to research and develop competitive intelligence with respect to clients, industries and client prospects. International Network of Law Firms Since 1998, Miles & Stockbridge has been the Maryland member of TerraLex, one of the largest international law firm networks with nearly 160 member firms and 15,000 attorneys worldwide. Our connections are deep and meaningful throughout TerraLex and through other strategic law firm partnerships we have established globally. Client Visit Program Miles & Stockbridge conducts a formal client visitation program where lawyers in our firm regularly visit our clients at their place of business to learn about their business and to uncover opportunities. We have prepared materials and conducted training programs designed to enable our lawyers to make the most of these visits. Client Satisfaction Interview Program We conduct a formal client satisfaction interview program where our firm’s chairman and chief marketing officer personally interview firm clients each year to assess their satisfaction with Miles & Stockbridge. Almost every client satisfaction interview we conduct fosters trust, deepens the client relationship, and uncovers ways we can bring additional value to our clients Washington, DC Office and I-270 Corridor Our firm’s focused growth at this time is in Washington, D.C. and along the I-270 corridor (Rockville, Northern Virginia and Frederick). We opened a Washington, D.C. office in February 2012 and have more than doubled the size of that office with 68 lawyers in the metro DC region. Lawyers in the D.C. region focus on matters pertaining to finance and capital markets, real estate, manufacturing and distribution, and specific lawyer strengths related to the region, including government contracts, intellectual property, education, white collar criminal defense, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.
