Paralegal Tax Specialist

Summary

Under the direction of Tax, Trust and Estate and Corporate Finance attorneys, the Tax Specialist/Paralegal is responsible for preparing state and federal individual, corporate and partnership income tax returns, and fiduciary income tax returns for estates and trusts.  Primary Paralegal responsibilities are preparation of probate court documents, preparation of gift and estate tax returns and related documents, document and file management, client communication and information gathering, organizing materials and schedules for lawyers and clients related to client matters

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in an accounting firm or law firm in the preparation of individual, corporate and partnership income tax returns, and fiduciary income tax returns for estate and trusts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Advanced Excel, tax preparation software; proficiency with an Intuit tax program is a plus.
  • Maintain an active PTIN (Preparer tax Identification number)

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Law Firm experience preferred.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Experience in Tax, Trust and Estates preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Tax Preparation (60%)
    • Prepare state and federal individual, corporate and partnership income tax returns.
    • Prepare fiduciary income tax returns for estates and trusts.
    • Prepare tax related correspondence.
    • Prepare partnership and corporation tax work papers.
    • Assist with maintenance of IRS practitioner functions such as e-Services.
  • Paralegal (25%)
    • Manage and organize all aspects of documents, files, and databases associated with each specific case/matter assigned by primary attorney.
    • Preparation of probate filings, gift/estate tax return preparation, corporate, financial and/or real estate documents, estate planning documents.
    • Ensure that attorneys working on case/matter have all necessary information available to them in a timely manner.
    • Maintain all physical elements of the case/matter in an organized, efficient, and accurate manner.
    • Provide both attorney(s) and client(s) with information necessary for business process, decision making, and review in a timely manner.
    • Conduct various document searches and factual research.
    • Probate Court filings.
    • Anticipate attorney and client needs related to matters or cases under management.
    • Delegate effectively and as appropriate to Legal Administrative Assistants, support staff, and/or Case Clerks working on the case/matter.
    • Handle all communications, whether oral and written, in a prompt and professional manner ensuring that information is transferred in an accurate and thorough manner.
    • Act as a liaison among various internal departments as well as with outside agencies.
    • Meet billable hour requirement of 1550 per year.

General and Administrative (15%)

  • Time entry, scanning, e-mailing, etc.
  • Assist in Firm marketing for practice area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.  While performing the responsibilities of the position, these work environment characteristics are representative of the environment the person in this position will encounter. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in a professional, fast paced office environment that may require additional hours to complete work.
