Responsibilities

The position supports global patent procurement and enforcement, global freedom to operate, due diligence, litigation, and business and strategic planning, among other objectives.  The rationale for the position is that non-attorneys who have excellent technical backgrounds, strong interpersonal skills and experience in drug development at Lilly and who develop sound understanding of basic patent law, other legal concepts, and regulatory-related aspects of exclusivity around the world through formal training and on-the-job experience enhance the provision of superior legal services across the company and around the world.  Responsibilities include:

      • Manage technical content drafting for patent applications.
      • Support patent prosecution by assisting with technical content in communications with patent offices globally.
      • Develop effective search queries and perform landscape, FTO, and patentability searches; work with scientists and attorneys to develop strategies for definitive searches.
      • Analyze and organize search findings; report organized findings to attorneys to inform landscape, patentability, exclusivity and FTO strategies.
      • Provide the above to support due diligence of external assets.
      • Obtain, create, organize, analyze, and maintain information relating to research, development, and commercialization activities, competitive intelligence, prior art, exclusivity, FTO, agreements, product characteristics, and advice.
      • Participate in and influence Scientific Disclosure planning and execution by effectively

Basic Qualifications:

 

      • B.S. degree in Chemistry or related field
      • At least 2 years of technical experience relating to drug discovery and / or development of pharmaceutical products
      • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

 

      • Advanced degree in Chemistry or related field
      • Fluent in nomenclature conventions used to describe organic chemical compounds
      • At least 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical discovery chemistry
      • Ability to master new bodies of knowledge, such as significant aspects of global patent law and regulatory law, as well as new IT and operational systems
      • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
      • Demonstrated learning agility
      • Excellent attention to detail
      • Ability to appropriately prioritize and self-manage, including the ability to manage multiple projects with multiple attorney partners
      • Good project management skills
      • Ability to influence, challenge, and work on cross-functional teams and at different levels
      • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and/or negotiation skills
      • Ability to work productively and successfully as an individual contributor and/or team member
