GENERAL PURPOSE Under minimal supervision, assist lawyers with drafting court probate documents, estate inventories, estate and gift tax returns and correspondence with clients. Assist clients in understanding the probate processes. Administer complex and taxable estates and manage estate trust funding. Oversee the work of paralegal assistants and more junior paralegals. Perkins Coie LLP is seeking a detail-oriented probate paralegal to work with our Personal Planning Group. Responsibilities include preparing gift and estate tax returns; coordinating and attending client conferences; assisting attorneys in preparing for client meetings; administering allocation of assets; trust funding and asset transfers; and maintaining current knowledge of Washington and Oregon probate proceedings. In addition, the probate paralegal will create federal and state estate tax returns; estate, generation-skipping tax elections; manage intestate and insolvent estates; conduct estate and gift tax calculations and projections tax returns; and conduct evaluation of assets, including interest in business entities. Organizational, analytical and communications skills a must. SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED Advanced proficiency in Excel, strong word processing skills, ability to express self effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrate increased level of technical understanding of legal tasks and procedures with probate law. Demonstrate ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment. Ability to supervise and train other paralegals and new attorneys. Work directly with clients and other professionals outside the firm. Experience with sophisticated and technical probate issues and excellent customer service skills. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires a minimum of five years probate paralegal experience. Bachelors degree preferred.
