Serve as a member of the Projects & Programs Team in the Technology Department, which provides project management, business systems analysis, and subject matter expertise to define and manage the implementation of projects for the firm in areas such as technology, human resources, marketing, finance, practice management. Manage projects requiring basic technical expertise, a knowledge of the legal environment, and knowledge of organizational structures, strategic and tactical planning and logistics. Projects may involve new legal applications, strategic planning, process improvement, introduction of applications, and development of related policy. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS These essential functions are primary job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation. Scope of responsibility includes: The ability to independently plan and manage complex technical or strategic projects for the firm sponsored in roadmaps for all departments and practice groups. Areas of applied expertise include: Planning, Schedule and Scope Management, Communications, Risk Assessment and Management, Issue Resolution, Vendor Management, Budget Control, and Program Management. Planning: Create project charters, plans and schedules, working with the Perkins Coie Project Management Methodology. Negotiate and/or coordinate with resource managers for required resources. Establish and communicate, to resource managers and project participants, the expectations of project team members. Schedule & Scope Management: Develop scope definition and validate with the sponsor and stakeholders. Establish project controls to ensure that each project stays within the agreed upon scope definition. Recognize when scope changes are required to meet the projects objectives and negotiate those changes with the sponsor, stakeholders, and team members. Establish project schedule as part of the baseline, working with the defined scope and the project plan. Establish project controls to ensure that each project performs according to the baseline project schedule. Communications: Ensure a Change Management & Communication Plan is established for each project. Work with the assigned change management lead and manage each aspect of the plan throughout the project cycle. Include change management activities in project status reports. Develop and present concise recommendations and progress reports to sponsors, stakeholders, and senior management. Risk Assessment & Management: Conduct a Risk Assessment for each project, establish a Risk Management Plan for each project and manage to the established contingencies and mitigation strategies throughout each project. Issue Resolution: Use standard Project Management tools and methods to identify and manage project issues to resolution. Vendor Management: Oversee contract approval activities between the vendor, Perkins Coie Procurement, business owners and subject matter experts. Identify and manage performance issues associated with established vendor agreements and/or contracts. Budget Control: In cooperation with the departmental management teams, establish budget estimates during the annual budgeting cycle, to include assumptions, staffing estimates, and capital costs for proposed projects. Work with the Projects and Programs team to refine and document individual project budgets as part of the project approval process. Manage expenses to the project budget and provide routine budget reports. Program Management: Begin to coordinate a series of project efforts focused on specific business areas within the departments. Establish and manage the activities, risks and issues among related, integrated projects. Decision Making & Supervision: Act as an independent problem solver who can make high quality judgments and decisions quickly. SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to fit the needs of a defined project, making progress despite ambiguity. Outstanding written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present project proposals, issues and outcomes to senior leadership. Excellent organizational skills to work with cross functional and leadership teams. Strong negotiations skills, with a demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate with mid-level management for internal resources. Ability to manage using established processes, recognize where these are lacking, and define creative approaches to keep project successfully on target to meet the objectives. Demonstrated ability to define and implement the appropriate approach in an initially unstructured or ill-defined project. Strong project and time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects at once, while providing the leadership required to keep projects within scope, schedule and budget. Demonstrated ability to develop estimates of time, material and cost and manage to budget on a day-to-day basis. Strong analytical, problem-solving skills. Strong facilitation skills, including direct experience facilitating design, process improvement, decision tree, technical and closure review sessions, achieving clear recommendations or decisions as an outcome. SPECIFIC SKILLS PREFERRED Experience working in a PMO and/or working with Business Systems Analysts. Familiarity with the working knowledge of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) current release. Understanding of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) or other software development methodologies such as Scrum, Agile. Experience with vendor interaction and project budgeting Thorough working knowledge of standard Project Management methodologies and tools, including Smartsheet and Visio. Working knowledge of work breakdown structures and the ability to apply this approach to project planning and estimating. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE The position requires a minimum of 5 years of Project Management experience. A Bachelor's Degree in business, engineering or computer science is highly desirable. Formal training and education in project management, risk assessment, and negotiations is highly desirable. Certification such as a PMP is desired, but not required. Colorado compensation range: $94,590 - $146,340 annually New York compensation range: $109,760 $169,810 annually These ranges are specific to Colorado and New York, depending on qualification and experience. These ranges may not be applicable to other locations. Perkins Coie may provide a discretionary bonus annually and information regarding benefits can be found here.
